Lesson 1
- Select four portraits from the ppt. which interest you. On one page of your sketchbook stick in the four images with the basic details and then write one or two sentences explain why each one interest you and what the image says about the subject.
- Choose the subject for your portrait-
This could be someone in your family, a friend, a teacher, a member of the support staff or school community. It could be someone famous you admire or it could be a self-portrait.
- Brainstorm your subject

- Using the example questions below interview your subject (or if your subject is famous find an interview that answers similar questions)

2. Where were you born?
3. Where have you lived?
4. What are your favourite things in the world?
5. What job do you do?
6. What do you like to do in your spare time?
7. What is your favourite place on sit down and relax?
8. What is your favourite place to visit?
9. What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you?
10. What is your proudest moment?
11. What are your dreams and hopes?
12. What is your favourite colour?
13. What is your favourite time of day?
14. Which three words would you use to describe yourself?
15. Which words do you think other people would use to describe you?
Lesson 2
- Take 5 to 10 images photographs of your subject (or if your subject is famous find 5 to 10 images). When taking/finding your images think about the type of images we took for you portrait drawing and the images on the ppt.
Lesson 3- Practice Sketches
In your sketchbooks, please take some time to sketch out your 5 favourite images. This should give you a rough idea of the challenges of the piece you would be undertaking and should help you select your final choice.
Lesson 4- Art History/ Research
Using the artist- Lucien Freud, David Hockney or Andre Derain (pick your favourite style) complete the following art history research task-

Write a paragraph about the artist and their work (4-5 facts)
THE BASIC DETAILS OF IMAGE:

Like a reporter or scientist, use ordinary language to describe what you see.
ANALYSING THE IMAGE:
Break the work down into the elements that make it up to understand how the artist created it
What size brush strokes?
What direction do the brush strokes go?
Is the paint thick or thin paint?
INTERPRETING THE IMAGE:
Explain what the work is saying
JUDGING THE IMAGE:
Give your opinion of the work
VISUAL ANALYSIS:
Produce a copy of the portrait using acrylic paint

- Where and when were they born and where do they live and work?
- What was their primary type of artwork (paintings, drawings, sculptures or prints, etc.)
- What are their most famous artworks?
- What is the style and feel of their work?

- Artwork’s date
- Media (what it is made of?)
- Size of the work
- Location of the work
DESCRIBING THE IMAGE:

- What is the pose?
- What is the expression on the face?
- Where is the light coming from?
ANALYSING THE IMAGE:
Break the work down into the elements that make it up to understand how the artist created it
- How has the artist used tone in the work?
- How has the artist used colors in this work?
- How has the art used the paint and what are the brush stokes like?
What size brush strokes?
What direction do the brush strokes go?
Is the paint thick or thin paint?
INTERPRETING THE IMAGE:
Explain what the work is saying
- What is the mood or feeling of the work?
- What do you think is says about the subject of the portrait?
JUDGING THE IMAGE:
Give your opinion of the work
- What do you like about the work?
VISUAL ANALYSIS:
